LookItUp privacy policy

What stays on your phone
Your books, saved words, quotes, practice history and your cat's care live on your device. Word meanings come from LookItUp's built-in dictionary, and translations are made on your phone. We do not run accounts and we never see your books.
The first time you translate into a language, your phone downloads that language's translation model from Google; after that, translation works offline. Reminders are scheduled on your phone, and your cat's name stays there too.
Usage statistics
LookItUp uses Google Firebase Analytics to count how the app is used, for example screens opened, words saved and cards practiced, so we can improve it. These events never contain the text of your books or the words you save, and LookItUp does not collect your advertising identifier. Firebase Remote Config tells the app its current settings, such as the free limits.
LookItUp Plus
LookItUp Plus is sold through the App Store. Purchases are managed by RevenueCat, which receives an anonymous app user ID and your purchase status. We never see your payment details.
Saving words from your browser
If you link the LookItUp extension for Chrome or Safari to your app, the words you save there are sent to our server (Cloudflare) with the sentence they came from and the page's title and address, so your LookItUp app can pick them up. They are tied to a random code, not to your name or email. Once your app has a word it is deleted from the server, and words that are never picked up are deleted after 180 days. You can unlink a browser, or unlink all browsers and delete everything, at any time in the LookItUp app (You → Save from your browser).
Helping the dictionary
When "Help improve the dictionary" is on (in the app and in the browser extensions), a word that LookItUp's dictionary could not explain well is counted on our server: just the word, what was missing (no entry, no translation, or a short explanation) and the language you learn in. No sentence, no page, no ID. A word is counted once per device, and these counts are sent about once a day. You can turn this off in You (app) or in the extension's menu.
If you send feedback about a word, we receive the word, the reason you chose, your note, the meaning LookItUp showed, your language and the app version, and the sentence only if you tick "Include the sentence". We use the counts and feedback only to improve LookItUp's dictionary, and delete them after a year.
Online word details
When "Automatic free details" is on, a word that is not in LookItUp's dictionary is sent to Free Dictionary API and Tatoeba to find examples. You can turn this off in You.
Children
LookItUp is not directed to children under 13 and does not knowingly collect their personal information.
